The Magnet: Concept Art

Character DesignBackground Design

Description

Concept art from my short animation, “Magnet: The Attractive Superhero”. The background was inspired by the Superman animated series, as well as the environment designs from “Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends” and “Danny Phantom”. I felt the lineless, minimal shapes with a heavily restricted colour palette would make for a strong visual style without distracting from the character.

For Nicole, the protagonist, her design was based on the traditional “magical girl” uniform- strong, limited colour palette, a flouncy skirt and absolutely-not-armoured costume, and finally hair that doesn’t really make sense when you think about it too much. And, of course, giant cool glasses (in lieu of a domino mask) which doesn’t really hide the face at all, but definitely conceals her identity. Her colour palette is a warmer variation of magnets themselves- greys, blue and red. I chose the warmer palette to make her feel more open, naive, and friendly, rather than the aloofness, calm, and level-headedness more often associated with cooler tones.
